Laurie's most recent work
is concerned with exploring the surface with encaustic paint (hot
beeswax and pigment). It is the poetics of materiality and process that
is the driving force in the work.
The work is concerned with the surface whether it is embracing the
brushstroke, opposing it, scraping back layers, or creating optical
depths.
Beeswax
The combination of biology
and energy is astonishing, for it takes two million flowers to yield
one pound of honey, and six to ten pounds of honey to yield one pound
of wax.
I have chosen beeswax as a painting material to depict the geological
forms of the landscape from an aerial perspective.
From above one can observe the patterns and systems that are formed by
our natural world.
